Basic information
Operating principle and design
A fan coil unit (FCU) is a device for cooling or heating the air in a room. It operates by circulating cold or hot water through a heat exchanger, through which a fan blows air. As a result, the air reaches the desired temperature.
Main components: housing, copper-aluminum heat exchanger, fan unit, filter, drain pan, condensate drainage system, electric motor, control system, and control valves. When operating in cooling mode, condensate is formed, which is collected and drained through the drain.
Fan coil units are classified by the number of heat exchangers: two-pipe (one heat exchanger, single-mode operation) and four-pipe (two heat exchangers, ability for simultaneous cooling and heating of different zones). They also differ by installation type: wall-mounted, cassette, ducted, floor-ceiling.

Types and configurations
Types of fan coil units
Depending on the installation method and the number of heat exchangers, fan coil units are divided into several types.
Wall-mounted
They are mounted on the wall, externally resembling indoor units of split systems. Suitable for small offices, hotel rooms, and residential premises.
Cassette
They are mounted in a suspended ceiling and distribute air in several directions. They come in single- and four-way flow types. Used in administrative buildings, shops, restaurants.
Ducted
They are placed behind a suspended ceiling and work with a duct system. Virtually invisible in the interior, can serve several rooms. One of the most popular types.
Floor and ceiling
Versatile models that can be mounted on the floor or under the ceiling. Convenient when it is impossible to install cassette or ducted models.
Two-pipe
Equipped with one heat exchanger. Works in one mode – cooling or heating. To change the mode, switching in the piping system is required.
Four-pipe
Has two heat exchangers. Allows simultaneously cooling some zones and heating others. Provides independent temperature control in the off-season.
How it works
Operating principle of a fan coil
The process of cooling or heating the air consists of several sequential stages.
01
Coolant supply
Water of the required temperature enters the heat exchanger.
02
Air intake
The built-in fan draws air from the room.
03
Heat exchange
Air passes through the heat exchanger and changes its temperature.
04
Air return
Cooled or heated air is returned back to the room.
05
Condensate drain
During cooling operation, the resulting condensate is collected in a pan and removed through the drainage system.

Advantages
Why choose fan coil units
Fan coil units have a number of advantages that make them a popular solution for air conditioning systems.
01
Energy efficiency
Reduction of electricity costs compared to traditional systems.
02
Zoning flexibility
Ability to create separate climate zones with different temperature conditions.
03
Centralized control
Convenient control of the microclimate of the entire building from a single center.
04
Low noise level
Modern models operate quietly without disturbing acoustic comfort.
05
Ease of integration
They are easily integrated into existing heating and cooling systems.
06
Compactness
Many models are hidden in the ceiling or walls, not taking up useful space.
Recommendations for selection
How to choose a fan coil
To correctly select a fan coil, it is necessary to consider several key parameters.
- Thermal load of the room – calculation of cooling capacity and heating capacity.
- Required air flow – the volume of air that must be processed per hour.
- Mounting type – selection between wall-mounted, cassette, duct, or floor-ceiling versions.
- Noise level – permissible sound pressure level for this room.
- Parameters of the cooling or heating system – temperature and pressure of the coolant.
- Number of heat exchangers – two-pipe or four-pipe configuration depending on the need for simultaneous cooling and heating.

Selection and supply of fan coil units for buildings
A chiller fan coil system is used for cooling and heating office, commercial, hotel and public buildings. This solution is suitable for facilities where it is important to flexibly control the temperature in different rooms and maintain a comfortable indoor climate throughout the year.
Klimatrade specialists select fan coil units according to the facility parameters: room area, heat load, connection scheme, air flow rate, noise level and installation features. Depending on the project, a ducted fan coil, cassette fan coil, wall-mounted fan coil, floor-standing fan coil or ceiling fan coil can be used.
We supply fan coil units in Kazakhstan for different applications: a fan coil for an office, a fan coil for a hotel, a fan coil for a business center, a fan coil for a shopping center and a fan coil for central air conditioning. If you are planning to buy a fan coil, submit a request — we will select the equipment, calculate the parameters and prepare a commercial offer.
The fan coil price depends on the installation type, capacity, configuration, control system and operating requirements. Fan coil units are available for Almaty, Astana and delivery across Kazakhstan. Submit a request — Klimatrade specialists will help you choose a solution for your facility.
Frequently asked questions
FAQ on fan coil units
Answers to popular questions about fan coil units and their operation.
What is a fan coil unit?
A fan coil unit is an indoor unit of a cooling and heating system that uses water as a heat transfer fluid to maintain a comfortable temperature in the room.
How is a fan coil unit different from an air conditioner?
The air conditioner operates on refrigerant and has its own refrigeration circuit, while a fan coil unit uses chilled or heated water supplied from a chiller, heat pump, or boiler.
What types of fan coil units are there?
Depending on the installation method, there are ducted, cassette, wall-mounted, floor-ceiling, and console fan coil units. By the number of heat exchangers – two-pipe and four-pipe.
Which is better: a two-pipe or four-pipe fan coil unit?
A two-pipe system operates either for cooling or heating. A four-pipe system allows simultaneous cooling of some rooms and heating of others, providing maximum operational flexibility.
Can a fan coil unit be used for heating?
Yes. When hot water is supplied from a boiler or heat pump, the fan coil unit effectively works in heating mode.
Is condensate drainage required?
Yes. When operating in cooling mode, condensate forms, which must be drained through a drainage system.
How noisy is the fan coil unit?
Modern fan coil units are characterized by low noise levels and are suitable for installation in offices, hotels, residential premises, and other facilities with high requirements for acoustic comfort.
